End of Semester Prep

Wow, it's December already. Only 2 more weeks until the end of the semester! Did the semester fly by or is it just me?

This is the time of year when we all start fantasizing about the holidays and the few weeks of vacation during the winter semester break...ah, vacation.

Well, here are a few things to think about as the year-end approaches:

1. Have you applied for your summer internship yet?

YES, now is the time when applications for next summer's internships are due. Don't wait until the last minute!!

2. You can't apply for internships or part-time jobs with an outdated resume, get it cleaned up and application ready by stopping by the Career Development Center and meeting with your Career Advisor.

Here's wishing you a wonderful, relaxing, warm and dry weekend (indoors). Rainy weather means great opportunities to stay home and catch up on some late assignments, reading or just study for any upcoming exams. How about updating your RESUME or researching and applying for summer 2010 INTERNSHIPS (deadlines will end sooner than you think).

Well, whatever you decide, make it a productive and enjoyable weekend.

-Supports women who earned a Bachelor's degree before June 30, 2005 and are preparing to advance their careers, change careers or re-enter the workforce by earning a graduate level degree (MA, MS, MEd)
-One, 1-year scholarship award of $2000-12,000

Fall 2009 Job Fair

FALL JOB FAIR IS WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14th!!!

Are you ready for the job fair? Here are some tips to help you prepare for the big day:

• Be realistic with your EXPECTATIONS (job fairs are great networking opportunities; aim at gathering a select number of business cards instead of expecting that great job offer to come from the job fair)
• Dress PROFESSIONALLY (no jeans, gym shoes, sandals, other inappropriate attire and absolutely NO CLEAVAGE)
• Be polite (SMILE, SMILE, SMILE)
• Make a great FIRST IMPRESSION (no gum chewing, slang, loud perfumes/cosmetics or cigarette smoke)
  
• Bring multiple copies of your UPDATED RESUME (do not assume, nor be discouraged with companies referring you to their website to complete an application)
• Collect BUSINESS CARDS of all recruiters/representatives of companies of interest (you'll need to follow-up with representatives after submitting your applications)
• RELAX (think of the experience as a time to gather information about opportunities with the company and share your ENTHUSIASM and FIT)

Your Career Development Center staff will be on hand to assist you with additional preparation for the event or to answer any questions pertaining to your attendance at the job fair.

HAPPY MONDAY!

I hope that you had a great weekend; there was so much going on: the CSU Honors College Induction, the White Sox College Day game, and the Chicago Football Classic (Mississippi Valley vs. Alabama State) just to name a few. Hopefully, you got a chance to hang out and have a little fun this weekend.

Don't forget the CSU FALL 2009 JOB FAIR will take place on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 12:00pm - 4:00pm in the JDC Main Gym!

Now that the semester is under way, it's time to get back on track with your career development or internship plans.

It may not seem like it now, but time moves quickly and the semester will be over just as fast as it began. If you are planning to graduate this December, have you began your career search? Need to update your resume?

Congratulations to all December 2008 & May 2009 Graduates!!

Graduation is a time for celebration and reflection, BUT, do not forget your career goals and needs. The average job/career search can take 3-6 months to complete - don't celebrate too long.

It's a competitive market and you want to start early - the Career Development Center staff are here to assist you throughout your search.
